For this assignment I took two photographs, in the first one I tried to challenge myself to get a similar effect from natural light. To do this I photographed one of my favorite California sights, sunrise on the mountains. Because we live in a basin and the Mountains lie in the east the sun rises from behind the mountains, and before it appears fully in the basin the mountains are backlit by the sun showing only the outline of their forms. To take this photograph I lit the image both from the interior of my house and used the sunlight behind the mountains to try and make it feel almost like a black paper cutout. For my second photo, I took a portrait of my friend lit from the side by a studio light and from below by a small colored light. To achieve the effect with his hands I turned the FPS down, I did this out of a need to integrate a human portrait into the piece. However another thing I wanted to counter was this notion of the face, I don't like this idea of the human face being so important in portraiture. So I purposefully attempted to distance myself from it, leave it out of focus, and focus on the hands.
